Frequently Asked Questions about Tarot

Do you need to know personal information about me to do a reading?

That’s up to you. At the beginning of the reading I may ask something like “what is it you want to know, what bought you here today, or what is happening in your life?” You decide what you want to tell me, but the clearer the question the better the information from the cards. When we do a reading, we ask for the wisdom of the card to speak to your situation as you understand it.

If the Tarot is supposed to reveal things about my life, why does a Tarot reader ask me questions?

Simply to get clarity on how that piece of information relates to you specifically. The more clarity and specific your question, the more meaningful your reading will be, a reading is a shared journey. Questions like “what is the future of my career” can be much better if you ask “what can I do to create the career I want?”

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a Tarot reading?

Yes, think about your life and the kinds of questions you want to ask. Good open questions start with  How, What, Why. The cards are a reflection pool. They speak to what you have set in motion in a positive or negative way.

Can you predict the future?

No. A Tarot reading cannot predict your future it can only tell you the likely outcome at the time of the Tarot reading. Everyone has free will to accept the outcomes or change them through their decisions and actions.  A reading gives you information about the path you are on. It’s up to you to make choices that further your journey in a positive direction. The tarot can help you create the future you want based on advice and personal growth it can offer.

How can a Tarot reading benefit me?

It puts life in a larger context and makes clear how we are living our life. Sometimes, we are too close to our situation and lose sight of where we are going — or we get scared or stuck and don’t have a sense of what to do. The Tarot brings perspective that makes us more aware of our choices; it gets us back on track to live the life we want to live.

Will you tell me if you see something negative in the reading?

Something negative is only an opportunity to see something in a different light and then think and act in a way that can change your life in a more fortunate direction.

What if you see something “bad” in someone’s future?

What I see are patterns that people have set in motion. The cards give information about how to change those patterns. We help create the future by the choices we make now. The future is affected by how we act in the now. Something bad in the future is a potential that does not have to happen.

Frequently Asked Questions about Coaching

What is the difference between coaching and counselling?

1) Counselling generally aims to solve problems by understanding what happened in the past. Coaching is almost exclusively future-focused.

2) To counsel means to give advice. Coaches do not give advice – instead they use various techniques to facilitate the process of an individual finding the best path for themselves.

Is coaching appropriate for me?

If you want a change of some sort – whether it is changing or creating a habit or behaviour, improving your work-life balance, changing your career, improving your relationships, being more creative at work etc – AND you are ready to take steps to achieve it, then you will benefit from having a coach.

If you are looking for somewhere to simply vent about your past or your circumstances then you will likely waste your money on a coach.

How long will I need to work with a coach?

It depends on where you are, where you want to go, and how quickly you want to get there. Some clients are able to achieve their goals quickly, other clients like to take a their time. The coaching relationship continues as long as there is benefit to the client. Because this varies from one person to another, you can have individual sessions as and when you need them or you can purchase 6 sessions for the price of 5 and then book the sessions as you need them. Most people tend to have weekly or fortnightly sessions, especially to start with.

It is important to remember that many coaching techniques and processes can be learnt and practiced on your own. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, a good coach’s goal should be to reduce your dependency on them as soon as possible – that shows you’re becoming more resourceful and that you’re learning to more effectively deal with new situations as they arise.

How do you coach?

Coaching is a meditative practice for me. I use our sessions as an opportunity to quieten my mind completely so that I can calmly listen to exactly what you are and are not saying. I listen with clarity and without passing judgment on what you say.

An essential part of the coaching process is asking relevant and often challenging questions. My experience allows me to do so in a way that will keep you curious about yourself and that will inspire you to stretch your thinking. The point of each session is to make you more resourceful to find your own path going forward. The focus is entirely on what you want – I do not give you advice.
